![]() whether you want to see or hide the cursor.color choices for the stroke preview line (when lag prevents the draw line from being instantaneous),.pressure smoothing (and later in 2017, customizable pressure curve settings). It truly allows you to tweak the second screen tablet experience you prefer on the iPad, rather than having to settle for developer decisions. The amount you can customize in Astropad Studio is staggering in comparison to the original version. (I did myself several times during this week's testing.) Ideally, you also needed a Bluetooth pressure-sensitive stylus like 53's Pencil or Adonit's Jot Touch to get the full sketching experience in apps like Photoshop. It works either connected via USB or via Wi-Fi alone - meaning you can sit on your living room couch and sketch directly to a Photoshop canvas on your iMac. Buy a multipurpose mobile tablet to use as a visual graphics drawing device OR buy a single purpose, but highly dedicated visual graphics drawing device for, roughly, the same money as a large iPad Pro, precicsion stylus and an app, like Astropad.Enter Astropad Studio: The successor to the original Astropad comes nearly two years after the original, and it is every bit as innovative and smart as its predecessor, adding must-have features for true professional graphics artists - and making me question whether I'll ever need a Wacom tablet again.Ī few things you should know about Astropad Studio, if you're unfamiliar with the original Astropad: It turns your iPad Pro into a second-screen experience for your Mac, giving you practically lag-free drawing, sketching, or photo retouching using the company's patented Liquid rendering engine. It may get very close one day, where a serious decision would have to be made. The Astropad app is NOT a fully functioning replacement for a Wacom Cintiq tablet! ![]() ![]() I use a Adonit Jot Touch w/pixelpoint with Astropad and it has limted, but acceptable tilt recognition and full pressure recognition support for the Jot Touch. Yes, in Astropad's description, it is completely compatible with all of the tilt and pressure features of the Apple Pencil. However, I would also like to ask if the Adobe Photoshop software connected to the iPad Pro recognises the tilt and pressure of the Apple Pencil, do you know? Perhaps it is better for now to wait until some great Astropad upgrades have been developed and then I may think about switching to this wonderful device like the iPad Pro is. The two devices have some functionality overlap and the Astropad software, also, share similar functionalities, but each device comes from different pardigms. The iPad pro is a multipurpose computing device that happens to now have a capability to run a lesser powerful Cintiq-like visual graphics tablet that interfaces with a computer in a similar manner to a Wacom Cintiq. The Cintiq is a dedicated, high end hardware device designed for one single use purpose, only. That is where the big price difference is. The Cintiq will work with any computer and any drawing program. Leaving non-subscribers ( who maybe, like me, part time professional that still need these more comprehensive Astropad features, twisting in the wind) with having to use a feature devoid, bare bones Astropad! Plus, Astropad's developers are whining they aren't making enough money to keep up continued developement of Astropad and are thinking of charging a monthly subscription fee (what I call a "conscription" fee) to get a comprehensive set of "Pro" Astropad features set. I would really like the Astropad developers to make it possible to use there app with other painting and image editing apps, especially, Corel Painter. I would like to use Astropad with Painter, Pixelmator for the Mac and the new Serif Affinity Photos app for Mac, too!Ĭurrently, none of this functionality for using Astropad with other main computer drawing applications is there, yet.Īstropad's functionality will, probably, get better over time, but how long will it take to get to the level that is much closer to that of a Wacom Cintiq tablet? In addition, Astropad is more optimised, currently, for one application only. There is just not as many controls and shortcut setups to use with other apps in Astropad, as there are using the Cintiq, for drawing on the iPad to your computer's screen. The iPad's screen technology is superior to the Wacom Cintiq's own screen. Plus the ability to keep your iPad connected to your computer via either Bluetooth or direct USB connection is, also, a great option. The Astropad app with an iPad Pro and stylus is great!
