![]() ![]() The choice in lighting during this time was to leave the viewer with a feeling that something good was not going to happen. Low – key light was used when he yelled at her to stop what she was doing and come on and do him. The lighting used while they were on the front porch was also that of high light. There seemed to be an emotion of disgust and anger towards the man that she was about to shave. You could tell my Celie’s slow approach and very stiff demeanor that she had a lot on her mind and was determined to do what she had intended on doing, which was to end the life of the man that had caused her so much pain over so many years. It allowed you to feel everything that you could only imagine Celie was thinking. It made you feel as if you were right there during the time in which this was all taking place. The benefits from the style of lighting used throughout this scene provided a much more realistic yet intense feeling. Natural – lighting had been used on the shot where Shug is seen painting her nails and the children march pass her while she ask, “Where’s Celie?” This is the exact same lighting that has been used when the scene goes back to the strap that is being used to sharpen the razor blade that Celie will use to shave Mister. High – light was used at one point as the scene goes to the instruments that are being used on the children to perform the ritual. ![]() During this time it looked as if the cinematographer was relying more on the natural lighting of the environment attempting to give that scene more of a fill of her being out in the field reading.ĭuring this scene there is a point where the children in Africa are going through a ritual at the exact same time Celie is preparing to shave Mister. Once she realized he was looking for her it was too late and she was being slapped by him and then told to come and shave him. The scene started out with her being so intrigued with the letters that she found from her sister that she did not hear Mister when he was calling her. Throughout this scene Celie looks to have a lot on her mind. The use of the high – key lighting was done to put emphasis on what was supposed to be a very intense moment. Throughout this scene the cinematographer chose to use natural lighting along with high – key lighting. I chose to discuss the lighting in the “shaving mister” scene of the Color Purple film.
